Artist Statement
I would describe my paintings as magic realist, in that they depict a common representation of the world except for a seemingly magical element that is accepted or treated as normal within the world of the painting.
The starting point for my work is usually the sublime beauty of Nature, in particular Ireland’s countryside which acts as a stage for the abstract concepts or stories that interest me. My intention is to infuse my art with a positively quizzical look at humanity as part of a larger environment, its created cultures and all the paradoxes that entails, in order to tell the stories of existence (he said modestly). That is not directly to give a meaning for life but to look at the abstract and tangible systems that we put in place that gives it meaning. With each painting or series of paintings i aim to looking at a particular staged concept e.g. promise of capitalism (Merchant of Eden), self determinationt (The children), Banality of technology (Wonders of the Age), as seen through my Magic realist lens.
