Cyllene’s envoy was inspired by the spirit of classical myth more than any direct tail. Mountains play an central role in most mythologies as places of importance with it peak being the most symbolic aspect because it is believed that it is closest to heaven or other celestial bodies, with many religions have some sacred mountains that inspire rites and pilgrimages.
Mount Cyllene is a mountain on the Peloponnesus peninsula in Greece, famous for its association with the god Hermes. Cyllene herself was a mountain nymph (an oread) the personification of the mountain.
It is in Hermes aspect as the messenger of the gods (here symbolized as the Cock) that I took as my starting point, and so we spy our envoy being guided across the misty mountain top by cyllene.
Who are they? Where are they going? Where did they come from? What is the message? The only thing known for certain is that clarity diminishes the deep we peer into the distance.
“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”
